## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

N33807 WAS ON A TRAINING FLIGHT THAT ORIGINATED IN SAN JOSE CALIFORNIA AT THE REID HILLVIEW AIRPORT (KRHV) AND TERMINATED AT THE PASO ROBLE MUNICIPAL AIRPORT (KPRB); PASO ROBLES CALIFORNIA. THE AIRCRAFT WAS FUELED WITH 43 GALLONS OF AVIATION GASOLINE. THE TWO PILOTS VERIFIED OIL AT 6 AND HALF QTS. THE AIRCRAFT DEPARTED THE KRHV AIRPORT ON A NIGHT VISUAL FLIGHT RULES (VFR) CROSS-COUNTRY FLIGHT, NO ABNORMAL ISSUES WERE NOTED DURING THE FLIGHT. THE PILOT ELECTED TO MAKE A STRAIGHT-IN APPROACH TO RUNWAY 13 PLANNING TO PERFORM A ?TOUCH AND GO?. THE APPROACH AND LANDING WERE NORMAL; DURING THE DEPARTURE PHASE AT APPROXIMATELY 300 FEET, BOTH PILOTS HEARD AN UNUSUAL ENGINE NOISE ACCOMPANIED BY AN ENGINE VIBRATION. THE PILOT INITIATED A RIGHT TURN IN ORDER TO RETURN TO THE AIRPORT UTILIZING RUNWAY 01. THE ENGINE QUIT RUNNING WITH THE PROPELLER STOPPING AT APPROXIMATELY 200 FEET. THE FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR TOOK THE FLIGHT CONTROLS AND ELECTED TO LAND IN A VACANT FIELD LOCATED SOUTHEAST OF THE APPROACH END OF RUNWAY 01. FLAPS AND LANDING GEAR WERE EXTENDED. AIRCRAFT HIT THE GROUND ON THE MAIN AND NOSE WHEEL LANDING GEAR AND BECAME AIRBORNE MOMENTARILY; WHEN THE AIRCRAFT IMPACTED THE GROUND THE SECOND TIME, RIPPING THE LEFT MAIN LANDING GEAR OFF THE AIRCRAFT. THIS CAUSED THE AIRCRAFT TO START SKIDDING TO RIGHT WHICH THEN CAUSED THE RIGHT MAIN AND NOSE GEAR TO COLLAPSE. THERE WAS NO POST-ACCIDENT FIRE AND THE AIRCRAFT WAS INTACT WITH THE EXCEPTION OF LEFT MAIN LANDING GEAR, WHICH WAS LOCATED APPROXIMATELY 1500 FEET AWAY. THE AIRCRAFT HAD SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO BOTH WINGS AT THE LANDING GEAR ATTACH POINTS. THE AIRCRAFT ENGINE WAS EXAMINED; THE OIL DIPSTICK WAS FOUND UNSECURED WITH FINE OIL DROPLETS COVERING THE ENGINE ACCESSORY COMPARTMENT. THE DIPSTICK WHEN EXAMINED ONLY SHOW ONE QUART OF OIL IN THE ENGINE SUMP.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR18LA101](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR18LA101), Mar 7, 2018: Piper PA28R (N33807), Paso Robles, CA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilots' inadequate preflight inspection, which failed to ensure that the oil filler cap was secured and resulted in oil starvation and a total loss of engine power.
