## Narrative

PILOT STATEMENT:

ON MARCH 11, 2018 AROUND 2:00 I WENT FLYING MY STINSON 108-2; N 9457K. L WAS STAYING IN THE PATTERN TO PRACTICE THREE POINT LANDINGS DUE TO RECENTLY READING NUMEROUS ARTICLES ABOUT HOW THREE POINT LANDINGS ARE SAFER DUE TO LOWER AIRSPEED AND MORE CONTROL. I WAS ON MY FOURTH LANDING ON RUNWAY 09, AND HAD NOTIFED TOWER THIS WOULD BE A FULL STOP AND TAXI TO THE FUEL PUMP.

THE APPROACH FELT NORMAL AND THE AIRPLANE TOUCHED DOWN IN THREE POINT CONFGURATION. THEN THE FRONT WHEELS SEEMED TO BALLOON SLIGHTLY SO I APPLIED MORE BACK PRESSURE. AT THAT TIME, THE AIRPLANE VEERED TO THE LEFT AT ABOUT A 45 DEGREE ANGLE. THE PILOT APPLIED RIGHT BRAKE AND FULL RIGHT RUDDER BUT IT STILL KEPT GOING. THEN THE RIGHT WINGTIP HIT THE RUNWAY AND THE AIRPLANE NOSED STRAIGHT OVER.

AT THIS POINT, THE PILOT RELEASED HIS SEATBELTS, UNLOCKED THE DOOR AND CRAWLED OUT OF THE PLANE AND STAYED AWAY ABOUT 100 YARDS UNTIL THE CRASH CREWS ARRIVED ON THE SCENE TO ASSIST. THE ACCIDENT HAPPENED AROUND 2:25 PM.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB GAA18CA156](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/GAA18CA156), Mar 11, 2018: Stinson 108 (N9457K), Cedar Rapids, IA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s improper landing flare, which resulted in a loss of directional control and a nose-over.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
