## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

PILOT ATTEMPTED TAKEOFF ON UNIMPROVED PRIVATE RUNWAY THAT WAS COVERED WITH 4-6 INCHES OF SNOW. DURING THE TAKEOFF ROLL THE AIRCRAFT WAS ALLOWED TO LEAVE THE RUNWAY TO THE LEFT AND ENTERED INTO AN AREA OF DEEPER SNOW AND SOFTER GROUND. AT ABOUT 3/4 OF THE LENGTH OF THE RUNWAY (RUNWAY LENGTH APPROXIMATELY 1400 FEET) THE PILOT ATTEMPTED TO ABORT THE TAKEOFF. WHEN HE REALIZED THAT THE AIRCRAFT WOULD ROLL OFF THE END AND DOWN A STEEP EMBANKMENT, HE STEERED THE AIRCRAFT TO THE LEFT AND DOWN A MORE SHALLOW INCLINE. THE AIRCRAFT SUNK INTO SOFT DIRT IMPACTED THE RIGHT WING AND SPUN AROUND INTO A DITCH.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB GAA18CA173](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/GAA18CA173), Mar 20, 2018: Cessna 182 (N3024Y), Rapid City, SD, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's selection of unsuitable terrain for takeoff, which resulted in a loss of control and runway excursion.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
