## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON APRIL 19, 2018 AT 1840 EASTERN DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME, A CIRRUS DESIGN INC. SR20 AIRCRAFT, N746TM, REGISTERED TO A CORPORATION AND OPERATED BY A FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR, RECEIVED MINOR DAMAGE DURING A HARD LANDING AND GO-AROUND ON RUNWAY 31 AT THE W.K. KELLOGG AIRPORT (BTL), BATTLE CREEK, MICHIGAN. VISUAL METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS AND MODERATE HEAD WINDS PREVAILED AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT. THE INSTRUCTIONAL FLIGHT WAS BEING CONDUCTED UNDER THE PROVISIONS OF TITLE 14 CODE OF FEDERAL REGULATIONS (CFR) PART 141 WITH A LOCAL FLIGHT PLAN. THE INSTRUCTOR PILOT AND STUDENT WERE NOT INJURED. THE LOCAL FLIGHT ORIGINATED FROM (BTL) APPROXIMATELY ONE HOUR PRIOR TO THE INCIDENT.

ACCORDING TO THE INSTRUCTOR PILOT, THE LOW TIME STUDENT PILOT WAS SET-UP FOR A SHORT FIELD LANDING WHEN THE STUDENT ALLOWED THE AIRSPEED TO DECAY TO THE POINT THE AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED A HARD LANDING. THE INSTRUCTOR STATED HE TOOK CONTROL OF THE AIRCRAFT JUST AS HE REALIZED THE SLOW SPEED, BUT WAS UNABLE TO PREVENT THE HARD LANDING. THE INSTRUCTOR SUCCESSFULLY INITIATED A GO-AROUND NOT REALIZING THAT BOTH WING TIPS HAD CONTACTED THE PAVEMENT DURING THE LANDING SEQUENCE. A WITNESS, IN ANOTHER AIRCRAFT LOCATED AT THE DEPARTURE END OF RUNWAY 31, NOTIFIED THE INSTRUCTOR BY RADIO OF THE WING CONTACTING THE RUNWAY SURFACE. ONCE AROUND THE AIRPORT PATTERN THE INSTRUCTOR MADE AN UNEVENTFUL LANDING AND TAXIED BACK TO PARKING. THE AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED MINOR DAMAGE TO THE UNDERSIDE OF BOTH WING TIPS AND THE PITOT TUBE.

THE WEATHER AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT AT BTL: 2153Z, 32013KT, 10SM, CLR, 12/M01, ALTIMETER 30.25.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
