## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON APRIL 24, 2018 AT APPROXIMATELY 1900Z, THE OWNER, A PRIVATE PILOT, OF N9281E, A MAULE M-5-235-C, WAS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT WHILE ATTEMPTING TO DEPART FROM A COUNTY ROAD. THE AIRPLANE STRUCK A ROAD SIGN ON THE LEFT WING TIP DURING TAKEOFF. UNABLE TO REGAIN CONTROL OF THE AIRPLANE, THE PILOT ATTEMPTED TO ABORT THE TAKEOFF WHEN APPROACHING A TREE LINE BUT DID NOT ABORT SOON ENOUGH AND IMPACTED THE TREES. THE PILOT, THE SOLE OCCUPANT OF THE AIRPLANE INCURRED SERIOUS INJURIES, RESULTING IN AN OVERNIGHT STAY AT A LOCAL HOSPITAL. THE IMPACT CAUSED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE AIRPLANE, SEVERING THE RIGHT WING AND SHEARING THE ENGINE AND RIGHT FIREWALL.

## NTSB investigation

None matched to this report by aircraft and date. Search the NTSB's own records: https://data.ntsb.gov/carol-main-public/basic-search

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
