## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON MAY 6TH, 2018, THE AIRCRAFT DEPARTED AK-CHIN REGINAL AIRPORT (A39) ENROUTE FOR SANTE FE, NM. APPROXIMATELY 1 HOUR INTO THE FLIGHT THE ENGINE EXPERIENCED A CATASTOPHIC FAILURE (AS REPORTED BY THE PILOT). THE CREW ELECTED TO BAIL OUT OF THE AIRCRAFT AS IT WAS CURRENTLY OVER IN-HOSPITIBLE TERRAIN AND THE COCKPIT WAS FILLED WITH SMOKE. THE PILOT WAS CONCERNED ABOUT MAKING AN OFF AIRPORT LANDING WITH THESE FATORS. THE PILOT AND PASSENGER EXPERIENCED MINOR INJURIES AS A RESULT OF THE BAIL OUT AND SUBSEQUENT LANDING UNDER CANOPY.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ANC18LA034](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ANC18LA034), May 6, 2018: Grumman TBM-3 (N337VT), Fort Apache, AZ, destroyed. Probable cause: A partial loss of engine power for reasons that could not be determined based on the available information.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
