## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON MAY 7, 2018, THE STUDENT PILOT WAS FLYING PATTERNS WITH HIS INSTRUCTOR AT GOOSE BAY. AFTER MULTIPLE STOP AND GO LANDINGS HE DROPPED THE INSTRUCTOR OFF FOR INITIAL SOLO PATTERNS IN PA18. HE TOOK OFF, AND RE-ENTERED THE PATTERN FOR RUNWAY 8. AFTER TWO SUCCESSFUL STOP AND GOES, HE CONDUCTED A GO AROUND ON THE THIRD APPROACH DUE TO A SHIFT IN THE WINDS. ON THE FOURTH PATTERN, HE TOUCHED DOWN BUT THE WIND HAD SHIFTED AND CREATED A CROSSWIND GUST FROM THE NORTH. THE TAIL WAS BLOWN TO THE RIGHT CAUSING THE AIRCRAFT TO SWERVE. AS IT SLOWED, THE WIND PUSHED THE TAIL TO THE RIGHT WHICH VEERED THE AIRCRAFT TO THE LEFT INTO A LEFT GROUND LOOP. AS THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO A STOP ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY FACING THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION, THE RIGHT TIRE SUNK INTO THE SOFT EDGE OF THE RUNWAY AND TIPPED THE AIRCRAFT ONTO THE RIGHT WING.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB GAA18CA269](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/GAA18CA269), May 7, 2018: Piper PA 18-150 (N2432H), Goose Bay, AK, substantial damage. Probable cause: The student pilot’s failure to maintain directional control during landing with a gusting tailwind.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
