THE DECEASED WERE PLACED ON THE BEACH FOR SUFFOLK ME TO RECOVER. THE AIRCRAFT WAS RETURNING FROM KUUU TO KHTO AND WAS PRESUMABLY TRACKING THE GPS APPROACH TO RUNWAY 28 OPERATING UNDER VISUAL FLIGHT RULES. THERE WERE REPORTS OF A STRONG THUNDERSTORM MOVING FROM NORTH TO SOUTH IN THE AREA. RECOVERY EFFORTS TO FIND THE REMAINING 2 SOULS ON BOARD ALONGWITH THE WRECKAGE LASTED 6 DAYS DUE TO WEATHER AND LARGE SEARCH AREA. NTSB AND FAA PERSONNEL INSPECTED THE WRECKAGE ON 6/19 AND FOUND IT TO BE CONSISTENT WITH NOSE DOWN RIGHT WING LOW HIGH SPEED IMPACT TO THE WATER. THERE WERE NO AIRWORTHINESS CONCERNS WITH THE AIRCRAFT. THE BODY OF THE FOURTH SOUL WAS NEVER RECOVERED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA18LA157](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA18LA157), Jun 2, 2018: Piper PA 31 (N41173), Amagansett, NY, destroyed, 4 fatal. Probable cause: The pilot's decision to fly under a thunderstorm and a subsequent encounter with turbulence and restricted visibility in heavy rain, which resulted in a loss of control.

Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
