## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON 6/24/2018 AT 1630 MDT, N963CG SAILPLANE CRASH LANDED IN A HAYFIELD NEAR PAROWIN, UT (1L9). PILOT REPORTED A LOSS OF LIFT AND THERMAL ACTIVITY WHILE MANEUVERING. PILOT STATED THE THERMAL LIFT WAS NOT PARTICULARLY STRONG AND THE SUSTAINER ENGINE ALTHOUGH CERTIFIED TO 10 THOUSAND FEET WAS KNOWN FOR RELIABILITY ISSUES AT HIGHER DENSITY ALTITUDES AND RESTART WAS UNSUCCESSFUL. AT 8500 FEET STILL IN SINKING AIR, THE PILOT COMMITTED TO SELECTING A FIELD FOR LANDING. THE RIGHT ELEVATOR/HORIZONTAL STABLILIZER SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE DURING THE LANDING ROLL AND SUBSEQUENT GROUND LOOP.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB GAA18CA377](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/GAA18CA377), Jun 24, 2018: Jonker Sailplanes JS1-C (N963CG), Panguitch, UT, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s inability to maintain altitude and his delayed decision to deploy the powered-glider’s engine, which necessitated an off-airport landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
