## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

PILOT STATED THAT HE WAS MAKING A ROUTINE LANDING ON A FAMILIAR LAKE CALLED GULLER LAKE. THE FLIGHT TOOK PLACE AROUND 0100 AKDT AT DUSK. THE PILOT STATED THAT THERE WAS AN OVERCAST LAYER THAT PRODUCED A FLAT LIGHT CONDITION AND WITH THE LIMITED WIND THE WATER WAS SMOOTH. WITH THE COMBINATION AND FLAT LIGHT AND GLOSSY SMOOTH WATER IT WAS HARD FOR THE PILOT TO JUDGE HIS DEPTH PERCEPTION TO THE WATER. THE PILOT STATED THAT THIS WAS THE PRIMARY CAUSAL FACTOR WHICH CREATED THE ACCIDENT. THE PILOT WAS ABLE TO EXTRACT HIMSELF FROM THE AIRCRAFT AND SUSTAINED NO INJURIES.

A CA COUNSELING EVENT TOOK PLACE WITH THE INSPECTOR AND PILOT TO COME UP WITH A RISK-BASED DECISION MAKING MODEL TO PREVENT THIS FROM OCCURRING IN THE FUTURE. SEE PTRS# 201803624

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB GAA18CA375](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/GAA18CA375), Jun 25, 2018: Taylorcraft F19 (N3570T), Goose Bay, AK, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s failure to maintain a proper approach path during landing in dusky, flat light conditions, which resulted in a tree strike.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
