## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

OVERFLYING THE BACKCOUNTRY LANDING STRIP AROUND MID-AFTERNOON, THE PILOT OBSERVED LIGHT AND VARIABLE WINDS. WHEN APPROACHING TO LAND THE PILOT REPORTED A GUST OF WIND FROM THE REAR, PUSHED THE AIRPLANE FURTHER UP THE LANDING STRIP AND CLOSER TOWARDS RISING TERRAIN, MAKING A GO-AROUND UNSAFE. UPON TOUCHDOWN THE PILOT REALIZED IMPACT WITH THE TREES WAS INEVITABLE, AND SO STEERED THE PLANE BETWEEN TWO TREES SUCH THAT THE WINGS ABSORBED THE IMPACT ENERGY, PROTECTING THE TWO OCCUPANTS.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB GAA18CA405](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/GAA18CA405), Jul 6, 2018: Aviat A-1C (N891DC), Dixie, ID, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s failure to maintain an adequate approach in gusting tailwind conditions, which resulted in a runway overshoot.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
