## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON JULY 26TH AT APPROXIMATELY 1855 LOCAL TIME DURING EAA AIRVENTURE 2018, N677TS WAS APPROACHING TO LAND RUNWAY 33 AT THE ULTRALIGHT LANDING STRIP ON THE SOUTH END OF THE WITTMAN REGIONAL AIRPORT. THE AIRCRAFT MADE A NORMAL APPROACH AND TOUCHDOWN ACCORDING TO THE PILOT AND WITNESSES. ON TOUCHDOWN, THE PILOT DESCRIBED A SNAPPING SOUND FROM THE LEFT LANDING GEAR. HE ATTEMPTED TO KEEP THE BROKEN LANDING GEAR OFF THE GROUND AS LONG AS HE COULD BY MAINTAINING SOME EXTRA POWER ON THE ROLL-OUT. WHEN INEVITABLY THE BROKEN LANDING GEAR MADE CONTACT WITH THE GROUND, THE AIRCRAFT TURNED SHARPLY TO THE LEFT AND NOSED FORWARD PITCHING THE PROPELLER AND DAMAGING THE RIGHT WING. THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO A REST ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY NEAR THE FENCE. THE PILOT AND PASSENGER EXITED THE AIRPLANE WITH NO INJURIES. FURTHER INVESTIGATION POST-ACCIDENT, IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE LANDING GEAR BRACE LIKELY HAD A CRACK, WHICH LED TO THE WHEEL SNAPPING OFF. THIS TYPE OF CRACK WOULD HAVE BEEN UNIDENTIFIABLE IN THE PILOT?S NORMAL PREFLIGHT OR ROUTINE MAINTENANCE INSPECTIONS.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN18TA296](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN18TA296), Jul 26, 2018: Fisher Dakato Hawk (N677TS), Oshkosh, WI, substantial damage. Probable cause: The failure of the left main landing gear for reasons that could not be determined, which resulted in a loss of directional control during the ground roll.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
