## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE PILOT DEPARTED 3U2 WITH 39.9 GALLONS OF FUEL ONBOARD. THE PILOT PLANNED 2.5 HOURS TO HIS NEXT FUEL STOP AT LOL WITH A FUEL BURN OF 10.5 TO 11 GALLONS PER HOUR. THE PILOT STATED WHEN ENROUTE HE ENCOUNTERED LIGHT HAZE, TURBULENCE AND UNFORECASTED HEADWINDS. ABOUT 50 MILES FROM LOL, THE PILOT SAID THE FUEL MONITOR SHOWED 10 GALLONS OF FUEL REMAINING SO HE REDUCED HIS ALTITUDE FROM 11,500 TO 7,500 DUE TO THE HEADWINDS. AT ABOUT 9 MILES FROM LOL, THE PILOT STATED THE ENGINE STARVED FOR FUEL SO HE CONFIGURED THE AIRCRAFT FOR AN OFF AIRPORT LANDING. THE PILOT SAID ALL LOOKED GOOD UNTIL SHORT FINAL WHEN HE NOTICED A BERM AT THE EDGE OF HIS LANDING SITE. THE PILOT SAID HE TRIED TO CLEAR THE BURM; HOWEVER, WAS UNSUCCESSFUL.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB GAA18CA468](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/GAA18CA468), Aug 5, 2018: Cessna 185 (N9867X), Lovelock, NV, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's improper in-flight fuel planning, which resulted in fuel exhaustion and a subsequent total loss of engine power.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
