## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

PILOT ATTEMPTED TO TAKE OFF IN GUSTY WIND CONDITIONS. WHEN THE PLANE CLEARED GROUND EFFECT AND THE TERRAIN THAT WAS BLOCKING THE STRONGEST GUSTS, THE PLANE WEATHER VANED INTO THE WIND AND STALLED. THE PLANE STRUCK THE GROUND MOVING SIDEWAYS CAUSING CATASTROPHIC LANDING GEAR FAILURE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB GAA18CA494](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/GAA18CA494), Aug 12, 2018: Piper PA18 (N9884D), Gilliam Glacier, AK, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's improper decision to take off in gusting crosswind conditions, which resulted in a loss of control and collision with terrain.

## Other reports on N9884D (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Accident 19741125039499A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19741125039499A), Nov 25, 1974: Piper PA18150 (N9884D), Newell, SD, Destroyed. Chasing fox,plt made a quick turn to go back.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
