## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

AIRMAN HAD JUST DEPARTED THE WATER ON HIS FIRST SOLO TAKEOFF AND LANDING. WHILE ON DOWNWIND AND IN STRAIGHT AND LEVEL FLIGHT, AIRMAN'S CFI OBSERVED THE LEFT WING DROP APPROXIMATELY 30 -40 DEGREES AND THEN SAW THE RIGHT WING ROLL RIGHT. THE AIRCRAFT THEN DID A 180 DEGREE SPIRAL TO THE RIGHT AND DOVE STRAIGHT DOWN. THE AIRCRAFT APPEARED TO LEVEL MOMENTARILY BUT DUE TO MOMENTUM, HIT THE WATER FLAT AND HARD. THE AIRCRAFT WAS OBSERVED TO BE UPSIDE IN THE WATER WHEN THE SPRAY FROM THE CRASH DISSIPATED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA18FA235](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA18FA235), Aug 27, 2018: Airtime Cygnet (N186AT), Pensacola, FL, substantial damage, 1 fatal. Probable cause: The student pilot's loss of aircraft control for undetermined reasons.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
