## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE PIC SITTING IN THE RIGHT SEAT ALLOWED THE PASSENGER TO OPERATE THE AIRPLANE FROM THE LEFT SEAT. A SHORT FIELD LANDING ATTEMPT RESULTED IN AN ABORTED LANDING BEING INITIATED. AFTER SETTING POWER AND PITCH THE PASSENGER QUICKLY RETRACTED THE FLAPS FROM THE FULLY EXTENDED TO THE FULL UP POSITION CAUSING THE AIRPLANE TO SETTLE AT MINIMUM AIRSPEED. THE AIRPLANE WAS MANEUVERED TO IMPACT THE TREES INITIALLY WITH THE WINGS. THE AIRPLANE STRUCK MULTIPLE TREES WITH THE WINGS, PROPELLER AND FUSELAGE. THE WRECKAGE CAME TO REST WITH THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE FUSELAGE ON THE GROUND AND THE BOTTOM OF THE FUSELAGE AGAINST A TREE. BOTH WINGS SEPARATED AT THE ROOT AND WERE FOLDED AFT AGAINST THE FUSELAGE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB GAA18CA575](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/GAA18CA575), Sep 29, 2018: Piper PA28 (N40825), Spokane, WA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s improper retraction of the flaps during a go-around, which resulted in the airplane’s failure to climb and its subsequent collision with trees.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
