## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

AIRCRAFT WAS IN CRUISE FLIGHT HEADED NORTH OVER THE WATER OF TURNAGAIN ARM, INBOUND INTO ANCHORAGE. PILOT SMELLED BURNING OIL AND ENGINE BEGAN "SOUNDING ODD". AIRMAN TURNED AIRCRAFT AND HEADED SOUTH TOWARDS THE SHORELINE. AIRCRAFT ENGINE STARTED LOSING POWER, WHICH CONTINUED UNTIL ENGINE STOPPED. AIRMAN MADE EMERGENCY LANDING ON SHORELINE. UPON LANDING, NOSE WHEEL CAUGHT ON ROUGH TERRAIN AND AIRCRAFT FLIPPED OVER. HEAVY OIL LEAKAGE WAS VISIBLE ON BELLY AND RIGHT (PASSENGER) SIDE OF AIRCRAFT.

INSPECTION OF AIRCRAFT AFTER RECOVERY SHOWED THE B NUT ON THE HIGH PRESSURE OIL SUPPLY LINE FITTING GOING INTO OIL COOLER HAD BACKED OUT FROM THE HOSE APPROXIMATELY ONE FULL ROTATION, ALLOWING ENGINE OIL TO SPRAY OUT ONTO BELLY AND RIGHT SIDE OF AIRCRAFT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ANC19LA011](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ANC19LA011), Jan 22, 2019: Piper PA-22-150 (N7640D), Anchorage, AK, substantial damage. Probable cause: A loss of engine power due to oil starvation as the result of a loose B-nut fitting on the engine oil cooler, resulting in a forced landing to a soft, snow-covered surface, and a subsequent nose over.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
