## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON AUGUST 1, 2019, AT APPROXIMATELY 1350, N3447M, A PIPER PA-12 LANDED ON RUNWAY 16R AT MANASSAS REGIONAL AIRPORT (HEF). THE PILOT REPORTED THAT HE MADE A STABLE APPROACH. WHEN THE AIRCRAFT TOUCHED DOWN, IT VEERED TO THE RIGHT. THE PILOT?S FOOT SLIPPED AS HE ATTEMPTED TO CORRECT THIS CONDITION. THE AIRCRAFT CONTINUED INTO A GROUND LOOP. AS A RESULT OF THE SIDE WADING, THE LEFT MAIN LANDING GEAR COLLAPSED AND THE LEFT WING CONTACTED THE RUNWAY. THE PILOT AND PASSENGER SUSTAINED NO INJURIES. AT THAT TIME, THE FAA WAS NOTIFIED. THE AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED DAMAGE TO THE LEFT LANDING GEAR, LEFT WING, AND PROPELLERS. AN INSPECTION OF THE AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE LOGBOOKS REVEALED THAT ALL INSPECTIONS WERE CURRENT AS OF AUGUST 1, 2019.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB GAA19CA482](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/GAA19CA482), Aug 1, 2019: Piper PA 12 (N3447M), Manassas, VA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain directional control during the landing roll, which resulted in a ground loop.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
