## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE PILOT GROUND LOOPED AFTER RACING. THERE WAS A THERMAL (DEVIL DUSTER) OVER THE FIRST THIRD OF THE LANDING RUNWAY WHICH MAY HAVE CAUSED THE AIRCRAFT TO FLOAT. UPON TOUCHDOWN, THE AIR CIRCULATION CHANGED DIRECTION CAUSING A SUDDEN SIDE LOAD, WHICH THE PILOT DID NOT REACT TO QUICKLY ENOUGH. THE AIRCRAFT GROUND LOOPED AND INCURRED DAMAGE TO TWO CONTROL SURFACES. THERE WAS NO DAMAGE TO THE REST OF THE AIRFRAME, ENGINE AND PROPELLER.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB GAA19CA596](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/GAA19CA596), Sep 11, 2019: Pitts S1 (N515JD), Reno, NV, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain directional control during landing, which resulted in a runway excursion and a ground loop.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
