## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON JANUARY 16, 2020, AT APPROXIMATELY 1330 LOCAL TIME AN AMATEUR BUILT RANS, S-12 DEPARTED ARTHUR DUNN ON A SHORT FLIGHT. A PREFLIGHT WAS PERFORMED AND THE FUEL SUMPED. THE PIC STATED THAT ALL INDICATIONS WERE WITHIN NORMAL OPERATING RANGES DURING THE INITIAL RUN-UP AND ON THE RUNWAY. THE AIRCRAFT CLIMBED BUT STILL WAS NEAR THE DEPARTURE END OF THE RUNWAY 4 WHEN THE ENGINE STOPPED ABRUPTLY WITH AN ALTITUDE OF 200 FEET AGL. THE PIC STATED SHE LOWERED THE NOSE AND STARTED TO DESCEND, TURNING LEFT ABOUT 180 DEGREES, ATTEMPTED TO LEVEL, AND FLARE THE AIRCRAFT TO LAND BUT THE CONTROLS DID NOT RESPOND. STILL ON AIRPORT PROPERTY CAME IN ON THE GRASSY AREA TO THE NORTH SIDE OF THE RUNWAY WHEN THE NOSE AND LEFT MAIN GEAR IMPACTED THE GROUND, CAUSING THEM TO BEND AND THE WHEEL ASSEMBLIES TO SEPARATE, FOLLOWED BY THE AIRCRAFT GOING INVERTED AND FLIPPING OVER TO THE LEFT AND RESTING ON THE TOP OF THE WINGS. THE PILOT DID NOT SUSTAIN ANY INJURY. THE ACCIDENT WAS REPORTED TO THE FSDO, AND THE OWNER GIVEN PERMISSION TO HANGAR THE PLANE UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. THE AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED SEVERE DAMAGE. BOTH WINGS SNAPPED AT THE SPARS, THE NOSE AND LEFT WHEEL AND TIRE ASSEMBLIES BUCKLED AND DISLODGED. THE UNDERCARRIAGE WRINKLED AND SKIN TEARS ARE EVIDENT. THE WINGS NEEDED TO BE REMOVED BEFORE TRANSFER THEREFORE CAUSING ADDITIONAL DAMAGE TO RESTRAINING TUBES AS WELL AS FRAME TUBES. THERE WAS SEVERAL GALLONS OF FUEL ONBOARD THE AIRCRAFT AND NOT AN ISSUE. THE FUEL PUMP WAS ALSO OPERATIONAL AND NOT AN ISSUE. THE NTSB HAS BEEN NOTIFIED AND AWAITING ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR THIS REPORT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA20LA079](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA20LA079), Jan 16, 2020: Rans S12 (N73KA), Titusville, FL, substantial damage. Probable cause: A total loss of engine power for reasons that could not be determined based on available evidence.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
