## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE NEW OWNER OF THE RV-8 WAS GETTING A REFRESHER ON HIS 'TAIL-WHEEL' ENDORSEMENT AND HIS 'NEW' AIRCRAFT. THE CFI LOCATED IN THE BACK SEAT WITH ACCESS TO ALL FLIGHT CONTROLS BUT WITH NO CONTROL ON THE AIRCRAFT BRAKES. AFTER SEVERAL TOUCH AND GOES THIS PARTICULAR LANDING THE TAIL WAS COMING DOWN AFTER LANDING AND IT STARTED TO GET AWAY FROM THE PILOT(NEW OWNER/RECEIVING INSTRUCTION), AND STARTED GOING TO THE RIGHT SIDE GRASS AREA. THE CFI (PILOT OF RECORD) APPLIED IMMEDIATE LEFT RUDDER BUT HAD NO BRAKES TO APPLY. THE TAIL AND AIRCRAFT WENT TO THE RIGHT IN THE GRASS, AND AS IT SLOWED THE LEFT GEAR GOT SNAGGED AND THE PRESSURE OF THE SLIDE CONTINUED AND THE LEFT GEAR SNAPPED OFF FROM THE FUSELAGE. BOTH PILOTS WERE UNINJURED. AFTER SECURING THE AIRCRAFT THE CFI ASKED THE PILOT IF HE HAD HIS FOOT ON THE RIGHT BRAKE PEDAL HE STATED HE DIDN'T THINK SO. WHILE LANDING ON RUNWAY 9, A CROSSWIND OF 10-12 KTS FROM THEIR RIGHT AT HEADING 140.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA20CA087](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA20CA087), Jan 24, 2020: Vans Vans RV 8 (N130JK), Fernandina Beach, FL, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot receiving instruction’s loss of directional control on landing with a crosswind, which resulted in a runway excursion and the left main landing gear collapsing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
