## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON THE AFTERNOON OF APRIL 22, 2020, THIS FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR AND A STUDENT PILOT WERE ON A DUAL INSTRUCTIONAL FLIGHT IN A ROBERTSON R-22 HELICOPTER, N6703S. AFTER VERIFYING PROFICIENCY IN SOME BASIC FLIGHT MANEUVERS THE FOCUS OF THE LESSON TURNED TO AUTOROTATIONS. AFTER TWO SUCCESSFUL AUTOROTATIONS AT AN OFF-AIRPORT PRACTICE AREA THE FLIGHT RETURNED TO THE BASE AIRPORT (KEUL) TO TERMINATE WITH THE FINAL MANEUVER BEING A MAXIMUM GLIDE CONFIGURATION AUTOROTATION. DURING THE LANDING FROM THIS AUTOROTATION THE RATE OF DESCENT WAS NOT ARRESTED SUFFICIENTLY RESULTING IN A HARD LANDING AND BOUNCE. POST-FLIGHT INSPECTION OF THE HELICOPTER REVEALED THAT THE LANDING GEAR CROSS TUBES WERE BENT AND THAT ONE MAIN ROTOR BLADE HAD STRUCK THE TOP OF THE TAIL CONE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR20CA140](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR20CA140), Apr 22, 2020: Robinson R22 (N6703S), Caldwell, ID, substantial damage. Probable cause: The flight instructor's failure to set the proper rotor rpm during a practice autorotation, which led to his failure to maintain a proper descent rate and resulted in a hard, bounced landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
