THE PILOT REPORTED ENGINE FAILURE TO ATC AND MADE A FORCED LANDING ON U.S. HWY 59 APPROXIMATELY 12 MILES NORTHEAST OF THE DEPARTURE AIRFIELD (LRD) LAREDO, TX. PILOT STATEMENT:

PILOT PROVIDED THE FOLLOWING WRITTEN STATEMENT (VERBATIM); ENGINE MADE A POP AND BEGAN TO VIBRATE. AS I LOOKED UP THE NEAREST AIRPORT, IT SEIZED UP. UNABLE TO GLIDE TO AN AIRPORT I LANDED ON HWY 59 ABOUT 15NM NE OF KLRD. THE AIRPLANE WAS COMPLETELY UNDAMAGED, WE PUSHED IT INTO THE GRASS TO ALLOW VEHICLE TRAFFIC TO PASS, AND THEN AFTER LAW ENFORCEMENT ARRIVED WE TOWED IT TO A CONCRETE PAD AND SECURED IT.

POST-INCIDENT:

AIRCRAFT WAS DISASSEMBLED AND TRAILERED TO A REPAIR FACILITY WHERE CERTIFICATED MAINTENANCE PERSONELL CONDUCTED A PARTIAL ENGINE TEAR DOWN.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
