## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON JUNE 3, 2020, AT 08:30 (LOCAL TIME), N187PB CRASHED WHILE ATTEMPTING TO LAND ON RUNWAY 7 AT NEW SMYRNA BEACH MUNICIPAL AIRPORT (KEVB). WHILE TURNING FROM BASE TO FINAL, ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ (PILOT IN COMMAND) BECAME DISTRACTED WITH HIS PASSENGER, AND FAILED TO ADD SUFFICIENT POWER TO SUSTAIN FLIGHT. THE AIRPLANE STALLED, AND BECAUSE OF THE LOW ALTITUDE ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ WAS NOT ABLE TO RECOVER IN TIME. THE AIRPLANE HIT THE GROUND APPROXIMATELY 600 FEET FROM THE RUNWAY THRESHOLD, UNDER SOME CONTROL, WITH THE ENGINE AT APPROXIMATELY 2000RPMS. ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ SAID THERE WAS NO MECHANICAL ISSUES WITH THE AIRPLANE. THE AIRPLANE RECEIVED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE FROM GROUND IMPACT. ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ AND HIS PASSENGER WERE ABLE TO GET OUT OF THE AIRPLANE BY THEMSELVES. THE PASSENGER WENT TO THE HOSPITAL FOR A CHECK-UP, AND WAS RELEASED THE SAME DAY.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA20CA204](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA20CA204), Jun 3, 2020: Sonex Sonex (N187PB), New Smyrna Beach, FL, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot failed to maintain an adequate airspeed while on final approach and impacted terrain.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
