## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

2020-06-09 CESSNA 170 N2681D BOUNCED THE LANDING ON A GRASS STRIP AT KAIT AND CONTINUED POWERED FLIGHT LEFT OF THE RUNWAY HITTING A 12 FOOT HIGH PERIMETER FENCE.

THIS WAS THE FIRST FLIGHT FOR THIS CFI AND STUDENT PILOT (SP) TOGETHER. THEY HAD SPOKE PREVIOUSLY ON THE PHONE, BUT ON THIS DATE THEY PERFORMED A 5 MINUTE FACE TO FACE PREFLIGHT BRIEF AND WENT FLYING. THE SP PERFORMED A CROSSWIND TAKEOFF FROM GRASS RWY 08 KAIT AND THEN PROCEEDED 20 MILES AWAY TO KBRD WHERE THEY WERE TO DO LANDINGS ON GRASS RWY 19. WINDS WERE OUT OF THE SOUTH DURING THIS TIME IN THE 6-10 KT RANGE. THE CFI DEMONSTRATED 2 LANDINGS ON RWY 19 INTO THE WIND TO FULL STOP TAXI BACKS. THE SP THEN DID 3 FULL STOP LANDINGS ON THIS RWY INTO THE WIND AND THE CFI COMMENTED THEY WERE GREAT AND HIS HANDS NEVER HAD TO LEAVE HIS KNEES TO ASSIST. NO GO AROUNDS WERE CONDUCTED FOR TRAINING.

THE AIRCRAFT DEPARTED TO RETURN TO HOMEBASE KAIT. A STALL AND SLOW FLIGHT WAS CONDUCTED ENROUTE. AWOS WINDS ACCORDING TO CFI WERE 160/06, PUBLISHED CAME OUT AT 190/08, PILOT WITNESS ON GROUND STATED WINDSOCK APPEARED TO BE OUT OF THE SOUTH 8-10 AND SHOWING GUSTS. A 170B WITH A LANDING STALL SPEED OF 45 KTS MEANT THIS AIRCRAFT WAS NEAR THE EDGE OF ITS CROSSWIND LIMITS.

BOTH PILOTS STATED THAT THEY WERE LINED UP ON RWY 08 CENTERLINE USING THE CRAB TECHNIQUE. THE PLAN WAS TO STRAIGHTEN THE NOSE LINEUP JUST PRIOR TO TOUCHDOWN. BOTH PILOTS STATED THEY TOUCHED DOWN HARD ON CENTERLINE AND BOUNCED. THE AIRCRAFT TRACKS SHOWED THE AIRCRAFT WAS LEFT OF CENTER LINE HALFWAY TO THE LEFT RUNWAY EDGE. THE CFI TOLD THE SP TO "GO AROUND". THE CFI STATED THERE WAS HESITATION FOR A COUPLE SECONDS, THEN THE SP ADDED MAX POWER, THE AIRCRAFT HAD DRIFTED LEFT AND BOUNCED A SECOND TIME NOW ON THE EDGE OF THE RUNWAY. AT THAT POINT THE CFI TOOK THE CONTROLS. THE AIRCRAFT CONTINUED FORWARD ON A VECTOR 10 DEGREES LEFT OF RWY HEADING. THE AIRCRAFT CAME DOWN A THIRD TIME, THEN THE MAIN GEAR CAME OFF THE GROUND, BUT THE TAIL WHEEL REMAINED IN GROUND CONTACT AS THE AIRCRAFT CONTINUED TRYING TO GET AIRBORNE OVER THE 1200 FT BETWEEN INITIAL BOUNCE AND FENCE CONTACT. 40 FT PRIOR TO FENCE CONTACT THE TAILWHEEL CAME OFF THE GROUND AND THE AIRCRAFT HIT THE FENCE AT FULL POWER WITH A NOSE HIGH ATTITUDE.

THE AIRCRAFT TOOK OUT 5 WOODEN POSTS 20 FT APART AND A 100 FT SWATH OF FENCING AS IT GENERALLY WAS CAUGHT BY THE FENCE AND SLID ALONG THE FENCE UNTIL COMING TO A STOP. THIS CAUSED EXTENSIVE WING AND PROP DAMAGE. BOTH PILOTS WERE ABLE TO EXIT FROM THE RIGHT DOOR WITHOUT INJURY. LAP BELTS ONLY WERE INSTALLED AND WORN.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN20CA225](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN20CA225), Jun 9, 2020: Cessna 170 (N2681D), Aitkin, MN, substantial damage. Probable cause: The flight instructor's delayed remedial action, which resulted in a hard landing and loss of directional control while landing with a crosswind.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
