## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE PILOT STATED THAT WHILE ENROUTE FROM KLXT TO KALO, HE NOTICED THE AIRCRAFT BEGINNING TO OSCILLATE FROM SIDE TO SIDE, AND HE SAW THAT CYLINDERS #5 AND 6 WERE RUNNING HOT. HE COOLED THE ENGINE BY REDUCING POWER, OPENING THE COWL FLAPS, AND BEGINNING A DESCENT. HE PERFORMED AN UNEVENTFUL PRECAUTIONARY LANDING AT KGPH.

THE PILOT STATED THAT HE RAN THE AIRCRAFT ON THE GROUND AT KGPH FOR APPROXIMATELY 15 MINUTES, WITH NO PERFORMANCE DEFECTS NOTED. HE DECIDED TO RETURN TO KLXT. AT APPROXIMATELY 4 MILES FROM DEPARTURE, THE ENGINE AGAIN BEGAN OVERHEATING, THE AIRCRAFT BEGAN OSCILLATING, AND IT WAS UNABLE TO MAINTAIN ALTITUDE. THE PILOT PERFORMED AN EMERGENCY LANDING ON A ROAD, COMING TO REST IN A DITCH.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN20LA288](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN20LA288), Jul 16, 2020: Beech 36 (N630JL), Independence, MO, substantial damage. Probable cause: Failure of the No. 5 piston head and ring, which resulted in a total loss of engine power and the pilot’s decision to takeoff with a known mechanical issue.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
