## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

PILOT STATES: PICKING UP ONE PASSENGER AND LIGHT GEAR ON A TUNDRA SHELF. HE MEASURED THE TAKEOFF DISTANCE TO BE AT LEAST 1500 FT. BEFORE TAKEOFF, WIND WAS OBSERVED TO BE LIGHT QUARTERING HEADWIND. AFTER LIFT OFF, AIRSPEED KEPT DIMINISHING, ENGINE WAS OBSERVED TO BE DEVELOPING FULL POWER, AIRCRAFT SETTLED BACK TO GROUND. GEAR COLLAPSED AND PROP STOPPED WHEN IN CONTACT WITH THE GROUND. NO INJURIES. PIC WAS UNABLE TO MAINTAIN CLIMB OUT PERFORMANCE APPARENTLY DUE TO SHIFTING WINDS. AFTER EXITING THE AIRCRAFT PILOT NOTICED STRONGER GUSTY WINDS IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION FROM TAKEOFF. HE STATES WIND SHIFT AND A DOWNDRAFT WERE THE CAUSE OF LOSS OF LIFT AND SUBSEQUENTLY THE ACCIDENT.

NO FURTHER INVESTIGATION NECESSARY. ASSOCIATED PTRS AL03202003404.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ANC20CA088](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ANC20CA088), Aug 22, 2020: Cessna 180 (N9128T), Kotzebue, AK, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain an airspeed conducive to flight during takeoff.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
