## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE PILOT DEPARTED LIVINGSTON, MT (LVM) ON A PLANNED THREE HOUR FLIGHT TO COEUR D'ALENE, ID (COE). ABOUT 5-7 MILES FROM COE THE ENGINE QUIT. THE PILOT INTENDED TO LAND ON A ROAD BUT WAS UNABLE TO FIND THE ROAD DUE TO DARKNESS. THE PILOT CRASHED INTO A GROVE OF TREES NEAR THE INTENDED ROAD. THE PILOT RECEIVED MINOR INJURIES.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR20CA299](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR20CA299), Sep 7, 2020: Cessna 182 (N8885X), Coeur d'Alene, ID, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's inadequate fuel planning, which resulted in a loss of engine power due to fuel exhaustion and a collision with trees and terrain.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
