## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE PILOT-RECEIVING-INSTRUCTION STATED THAT THEY DEPARTED RUNWAY 32 AT JSO, MAKING LEFT TRAFFIC, WITH THE INTENTION TO PRACTICE A POWER-OFF EMERGENCY LANDING STARTING FROM THE DOWNWIND LEG ABEAM THE RUNWAY IDENTIFICATION NUMBERS. THE THROTTLE WAS REDUCED TO IDLE AT 1,300 FT AND BEST GLIDE SPEED (95 KNOTS) WAS ESTABLISHED. THE PILOT-RECEIVING-INSTRUCTION STATED THAT HE OVERSHOT FINAL APPROACH AND ATTEMPTED TO TURN BACK TOWARD THE RUNWAY CENTERLINE AND LAND. THE PILOT-RECEIVING-INSTRUCTION NOTED THAT HE OBSERVED A DECREASING AIRSPEED AND THAT THE FLAPS WERE NOT DOWN. THE AIRPLANE CONTINUED TO DESCEND DESPITE A FULL INCREASE IN ENGINE POWER FOR A GO-AROUND. THE PILOT-RECEIVING-INSTRUCTION STATED THAT THE AIRPLANE LIKELY WAS AT OR NEAR AERODYNAMIC STALL WHEN IT IMPACTED TERRAIN. THE AIRPLANE CRASHED ABOUT 500 FT PAST THE RUNWAY 32 THRESHOLD AND ABOUT 10 FEET OFF THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY. THE AIRPLANE IMPACTED HARD AND ALL THREE LANDING GEAR COLLAPSED. THE PILOT AND FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR REPORTED NO MECHANICAL MALFUNCTIONS THAT WOULD HAVE PRECLUDED NORMAL OPERATION OF THE AIRPLANE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

Probable cause: The student pilot’s failure to maintain control of the airplane during the landing approach and the exceedance of the airplane’s critical angle of attack at low altitude resulting in an aerodynamic…

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
