PIC DEPARTED UOS WITH AN AIRMET-T VALID. WINDS WERE REPORTED CALM BY THE PILOT BUT HE SAID IT WAS GUSTY ABOVE THE TREES. PIC DEPARTED OFF RUNWAY 06 AND ENCOUNTERED SIGNIFICANT WIND GUSTS NOT THAT WERE NOT APPEARANT FROM THE GROUND. CLIMBING OUT THE PILOT EXPERIENCED A TURBULENT DOWN DRAFT FROM THE TREE LINE. PIC ATTEMPTED TO CLIMB ABOVE THE TURBULENCE, BUT THE CLIMB PERFORMANCE WAS SEVERELY COMPROMISED DUE TO THE DOWNDRAFT.
