## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

AT ABOUT 10:30 ON 10/24/202 AIRCRAFT N7029T, A CESSNA 172, SUFFERED SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE DURING A HARD LANDING JUST SHORT OF RUNWAY 6 AT AIRPORT 18AZ IN CAREFREE ARIZONA. THE PILOT STATED THAT WHILE ENROUTE FROM DVT TO PAYZON, ARIZONA, WHEN SMOKE WAS OBSERVED COMING FROM BEHIND THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. HE DECIDED TO LAND AT 18AZ TO LOOK AT THE AIRPLANE. WHILE ON FINAL APPROACH TO RUNWAY 6, THE AIRPLANE STALLED FROM ABOUT 10 FEET AGL AND LANDED HARD, ABOUT 20 FEET SHORT OF THE RUNWAY. THE PILOT?S MEDICAL INDICATED THAT HE MUST USE HEARING AMPLIFICATION. HE WAS USING NOISE CANCELING HEADSET FOR HEARING AMPLIFICATION AND HE DID NOT HEAR THE STALL WARNING HORN. THE PASSENGER THINKS SHE HEARD THE HORN. THE NTSB HAD THE AIRPORT FIRE DEPARTMENT PERSONNEL CONFIRM FLIGHT CONTROL CONTINUITY FROM THE CONTROL YOKE TO THE ELEVATOR AND APPLY AIR PRESSURE ON THE PITOT TUBE, AND OBSERVED MOVEMENT OF THE AIRSPEED INDICATOR.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR21LA023](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR21LA023), Oct 24, 2020: Cessna 172 (N7029T), Carefree, AZ, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s exceedance of the airplane’s critical angle of attack while landing, which resulted in an aerodynamic stall.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
