## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON NOVEMBER 17, 2020 N956DA DEPARTED PUB ENROUTE TO LXH IN ORDER TO ACCOMPLISH A STUDENT SOLO AT LHX. THE PIC/CFI STATED THAT HE UTILIZED THE DIPSTICK AND FUEL GAUGES TO CONFIRM 3/4 TANK WHICH IN NORMAL FLIGHT CONDITIONS WOULD EQUATE TO 3 HOURS OF FUEL ONBOARD. THE CREW DEPARTED PUB TO LHX. THE STUDENT ACCOMPLISHED HIS SOLO AND THEY THEN RETURNED LHX TO PUB. WHILE ON AN EXTENDED BASE TO FINAL THE ENGINE SURGED AND SUBSEQUENTLY QUIT DUE TO FUEL EXHAUSTION. THERE WAS NO MENTION OF A FUEL CHECK PRIOR TO DEPARTING LHX TO PUB. THE FLIGHT SCHOOL HAS ON RECORD THAT ON THAT DAY THAT AIRCRAFT WAS RECORDED AS A "1/2 TANK" AIRCRAFT FOR TRAINING WHICH WOULD HAVE EQUATED TO 2 HOURS OF FUEL ONBOARD. TOTAL FLIGHT TIME RECORDED FROM DEPARTING PUB WAS 2.0 HOBBS TIME. THE PIC/CFI IS BEING REEXAMINED ON FLIGHT PLANNING, FUEL SYSTEM, AND PERFORMANCE.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
