## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON THE FIRST LEG OF HIS SOLO LONG CROSS-COUNTRY DURING LANDING ON RUNWAY 17 IN DILLON MONTANA, THE PILOT ELECTED TO GO AROUND APPROXIMATELY 40 FEET OFF THE GROUND.

THE PILOT STATED HE HAD SELECTED FULL FLAPS FOR LANDING AND WHEN HE APPLIED FULL POWER THE AIRCRAFT PITCHED UP AND STALLED. DURING RECOVERY HE ENDED UP IN A FIELD NEXT TO THE RUNWAY AND HIT A IRRIGATION DITCH.

THERE WERE NO MECHANICAL ISSUES PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT REPORTED BY THE PILOT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR21LA067](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR21LA067), Dec 8, 2020: Cessna 172 (N46017), Dillon, MT, substantial damage. Probable cause: The student pilot’s exceedance of the airplane’s critical angle attack during an attempted go-around, which resulted in an aerodynamic stall.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
