## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE PILOT WAS FLYING AT 5500 FT MEAN SEA LEVEL. AFTER ABOUT 40 MINUTES INTO THE FLIGHT THE ENGINE STARTED SPITTING AND SPUTTERING AND THEN IT SHUT OFF. THE OTHER PILOT ATTEMPTED TO RESTORE ENGINE POWER BUT COULD NOT GET IT STARTED. THE PILOT DECLARED AN EMERGENCY WITH ATC AND LANDED IN THE WATER.

THE AIRCRAFT WAS UNABLE TO BE RECOVERED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA21LA123](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA21LA123), Jan 22, 2021: Piper PA-32-301 (N8224H), Homestead, FL, substantial damage. Probable cause: A total loss of power for reasons that could not be determined, as the airplane was not recovered from the water following the ditching.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
