## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON FEBRUARY 5, 2021 AN AIRMAN TOOK OFF FROM WHITEMAN AIRPORT (WHP) IN A LIGHT SPORT AIRCRAFT TO FLY OVER TO THERMAL AIRPORT (TRM). THE PILOT'S INTENT WAS TO MEET WITH HIS INSTRUCTOR AT TRM IN ORDER TO RECEIVE A CHECKOUT FLIGHT FROM HIS CFI AS WAS GOING TO BE REQUIRED FOR THE NEW INSURANCE COMPANY THE AIRCRAFT OWNER WAS SWITCHING TO.

THE PILOT RECEIVED A WEATHER BRIEFING FROM A FLIGHT SERVICE TELEPHONE BRIEFING AND THEN PROCEEDED ON HIS ROUTE WITH FLIGHT FOLLOWING FROM SOCAL APPROACH. ONCE REACHING THE BANNING PASS THE PILOT CANCELLED FLIGHT FOLLOWING AND CONTINUED THE REST OF THE FLIGHT ON HIS OWN.

UPON REACHING TRM THE PILOT ELECTED TO FLY OVER THE SALTON SEA. AFTER ABOUT 45 MINUTES TO AN HOUR THE PILOT ELECTED TO ENTER THE DOWNWIND LEG FOR RUNWAY 35. UPON LANDING ROLLOUT THE PILOT EXPERIENCED A GUST OF WIND FROM THE WEST PUSH THE AIRCRAFT. THE AIRCRAFT BOUNCED HARD ON THE RUNWAY AND THEN VEERED OFF TO THE EAST SIDE OF RUNWAY 35. THE AIRCRAFT HIT THE SOFT SAND NEXT TO THE RUNWAY AND THE PLANE FLIPPED OVER RESTING ABOUT 6FT-10FT. OFF THE EDGE OF THE RUNWAY.

THE PILOT WAS UNINJURED AND THERE WERE NO OTHER PASSENGERS IN THE AIRCRAFT. AIRPORT PERSONNEL ASSISTED WITH MOVING THE AIRCRAFT TO A LOCAL FBO.

NO OTHER WITNESSES OF THE ACCIDENT WERE LOCATED DURING THE INVESTIGATION.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR21LA106](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR21LA106), Feb 5, 2021: Jabiru SP 250 (N7850K), Thermal, CA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s loss of directional control during landing in gusting wind conditions, which resulted in a runway excursion and nose over.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
