## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THIS SERIES OF EVENTS CONCURRED IN INDIVIDUAL PILOT STATEMENTS. CFI CANDIDATE AND INSTRUCTOR DEPARTED THE AIRPORT AT AUGUSTA FOR A TRAINING FLIGHT AT APPROXIMATELY 11 AM.

PERFORMING A SOFT FIELD TAKEOFF FROM RUNWAY 35 THEN CLIMBED TO PATTERN ALTITUDE AND TURNED LEFT AND HEADED OUT OVER LAKE COBBOSSEE AT APPROXIMATELY 3000 FEET. PERFORMED STEEP TURNS,

CHANDELLES, LAZY EIGHTS, STEEP SPIRALS, EIGHTS ON PYLONS, SLOW FLIGHT, AND POWER ON AND POWER OFF STALLS. THEN RETURNED TO THE AIRPORT ENTERING THE PATTERN 45° TO THE LEFT DOWNWIND FOR

RUNWAY 35 WITH THE INTENT OF PRACTICING POWER OFF 180 LANDINGS. THE STUDENT LOWERED THE LANDING GEAR AND PULLED THE POWER AND PROP TO IDLE ONCE ABEAM THE TOUCHDOWN ZONE MARKERS. HE BEGAN A TURN TOWARD THE RUNWAY WHILE MAINTAINING BEST GLIDE AIRSPEED FOR THE SIERRA. WINDS WERE LEFT TO RIGHT. THE PIC FLARED THE AIRPLANE ONCE OVER THE RUNWAY AND THE AIRPLANE LANDED HARD AND TO THE RIGHT OF THE RUNWAY CENTERLINE, BOUNCED AND ROTATED TO THE RIGHT. THE INSTRUCTOR TOOK THE CONTROLS AT THIS TIME AND APPLIED FULL POWER AND NOSE UP PITCH IN AN ATTEMPT TO CONDUCT A GO-AROUND. HE WAS NOT ABLE TO GENERATE SUFFICIENT AIRSPEED AND LIFT TO CLIMB. THE AIRPLANE IMPACTED A MARKER LIGHT WITH THE LEFT HORIZONTAL STABILATOR THEN CROSSED TAXIWAY ECHO AND RUNWAY 08/26 BEFORE IMPACTING A SNOW BANK, COLLAPSING THE NOSE GEAR AND COMING TO REST NOSE DOWN BETWEEN RUNWAY 08/26 AND TAXIWAY BRAVO. THE INSTRUCTOR PULLED POWER AND MIXTURE TO IDLE, SWITCHED THE FUEL TANKS OFF, TURNED OFF THE MAGNETO AND REMOVED THE KEYS. NEITHER OF THE PILOTS SUSTAINED INJURY.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA21LA151](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA21LA151), Mar 9, 2021: Beech Sierra (N3839J), Augusta, ME, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s improper landing flare, which resulted in a bounced landing, and a subsequent runway excursion. Also causal was the flight instructor’s delayed remedial action.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
