## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON MARCH 24, 2021, AT 0021 MDT, N74786, A MOONEY AIRCRAFT COMPANY MODEL M20B, SINGLE ENGINE AIRPLANE, ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^, WAS ON A CROSS COUNTRY FLIGHT FROM FST, FORT STOCKTON, TX TO TUC, TUCSON, AZ UNDER INSTRUMENT FLIGHT RULES WHEN IT IMPACTED THE GROUND AT A LOW SPEED AND LOW RATE OF DESCENT. AFTER ENCOUNTERING INSTRUMENT METEOROLOGICAL WEATHER AND RIME ICE SOUTH OF LSB, LORDSBURG, NM, THE PRIVATE INSTRUMENT RATED PILOT INFORMED ABQ AIR ROUTE TRAFFIC CONTROL (ZAB) THAT HE WAS ICING AND LOSING ENGINE POWER. THE LAST CLEARANCE PROVIDED BY ZAB TO N74786 WAS VECTORS TO LSB. A FEW MINUTES AFTER MAKING A TURN TO THE NORTHEAST, THE AIRCRAFT DISAPPEARED FROM THE RADAR SCOPES AT ZAB. THE PILOT AND HIS PASSENGER WERE SERIOUSLY INJURED AND THE AIRCRAFT WAS DESTROYED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR21LA141](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR21LA141), Mar 24, 2021: Mooney M20B (N74786), Animas, NM, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s delayed use in the operation of carburetor heat which resulted in a loss of engine power due to carburetor icing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
