## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE CFI PILOT WAS CONDUCTING REFRESHER TRAINING TO ANOTHER PILOT WITH A GOAL OF COMPLETING A FLIGHT REVIEW. ON DOWNWIND THE STUDENT REDUCED POWER AND THE INSTRUCTOR NOTED IT APPEARED THE STUDENT HAD INCORRECTLY REDUCED POWER TO IDLE AND THE ENGINE STOPPED PRODUCING POWER. THE INSTRUCTOR STATED TO THE STUDENT, MY CONTROLS. THE INSTRUCTOR RETRACTED THE FLAPS TO ZERO AND TRIMMED THE AIRCRAFT FOR THE BEST GLIDE SPEED. HE THEN VERIFIED BY TOUCH, THAT THE FUEL WAS SELECTED TO BOTH AND THE MAGNETOS WERE ON BOTH, BUT THE ENGINE WOULD NOT RESTART. THE INSTRUCTOR COULD NOT SAFELY MAKE IT TO THE AIRPORT AND ELECTED TO LAND ON A GOLF COURSE. ON LANDING THE LEFT WING CONTACTED A TREE AND THE AIRCRAFT ROLLED INTO A POND. THE AIRCRAFT WAS PARTIALLY SUBMERGED AND BOTH PILOTS ESCAPED WITHOUT INJURY.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA21LA187](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA21LA187), Apr 17, 2021: Cessna 172S (N60457), Venice, FL, substantial damage. Probable cause: A total loss of engine power for reasons that could not be determined based on the available information.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
