## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON MAY 1, 2021, JUST BEFORE 11:30AM HST ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ APPROACHED THE AIRPORT AT LANAI.^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ APPROACHED THE VOR FROM THE WEST AND TURNED FOR A LONG FINAL TO THE RUNWAY. AT THAT POINT EVERYTHING ON THE FLIGHT HAD GONE SMOOTHLY, INCLUDING THE APPROACH INTO THE AIRPORT. AT TOUCH DOWN A GUST OF WIND HIT THE AIRCRAFT. IT KNOCKED THE LEFT TIRE ONTO THE GROUND AND CAUSED THE AIRCRAFT TO YAW AND ROLL LEFT. ONCE THE OTHER TIRES SETTLED THE AIRCRAFT STARTED ROLLING TOWARDS THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY.THE ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ TRIED TO CORRECT WITH RUDDER BUT IT WASN?T EFFECTIVE ENOUGH TO KEEP THE AIRCRAFT FROM ROLLING OFF THE RUNWAY. ONCE ON THE GRASS CONTROL WAS LOST. THE AIRCRAFT HIT THE DIRT ACCESS ROAD THAT RUNS ALONGSIDE THE RUNWAY. IT DIPS DOWN, IT CAUSED THE NOSE GEAR TO COLLAPSE AND BREAK OFF, WHICH IN TURN CAUSED THE AIRCRAFT TO FLIP OVER. THE ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ MADE AN EMERGENCY CALL AND EXITED THE AIRCRAFT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ANC21LA035](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ANC21LA035), May 1, 2021: Cessna 172P (N3929), Lanai City, HI, substantial damage. Probable cause: The solo student pilot’s failure to maintain directional control during landing in crosswind conditions, which resulted in a runway excursion and a nose-over.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
