## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

DURING AN INSTRUCTIONAL FLIGHT THE STUDENT PILOT CONDUCTED A WHEEL LANDING. WHEN THE STUDENT APPLIED THE HEEL BRAKES DURING THE ROLLOUT, THE AIRPLANE VEERED LEFT. THE INSTRUCTOR TOOK THE CONTROLS AND APPLIED RIGHT RUDDER AND RIGHT HEEL BRAKE. THE INSTRUCTOR WAS UNABLE TO STOP THE LEFT TURN WITH THE RIGHT RUDDER AND BRAKE INPUT, STATING IT SEEMED AS IF THE LEFT BRAKE WAS FULLY APPLIED. THE INSTRUCTOR THEN APPLIED ENGINE POWER IN AN ATTEMPT TO INCREASE RUDDER AUTHORITY, ATTEMPTING TO PREVENT THE AIRPLANE FROM CARTWHEELING. THE AIRPLANE DEPARTED THE RUNWAY TO THE LEFT AND HIT A BERM. THE LEFT MAIN GEAR THEN COLLAPSED CAUSING THE LEFT WING AND PROPELLER TO STRIKE THE GROUND. THE LEFT WING SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR21LA190](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR21LA190), May 11, 2021: Piper PA-18-105 Special (N7296K), Coeur d' Alene, ID, substantial damage. Probable cause: The student pilot’s failure to maintain directional control during the landing roll, and the flight instructors delayed remedial action which resulted in a runway excursion and collision with terrain.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
