## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

PILOT CONTACTED SAN ANTONIO APPROACH, DECLARED AN EMERGENCY AND PROCEEDED TO KELLY FIELD. ONCE IN THE PATTERN AT KELLY FIELD, AIRCRAFT DID A COUPLE OF LOW APPROACHES TO SURVEY THE AREA AND TO SELECT AN APPROPRIATE SPOT TO LAND. PILOT COMMUNICATED WITH THE CRASH RESPONSE TEAM VIA THE TOWER ABOUT WHERE HE WAS GOING TO LAND AND THEN SET UP FOR A RIGHT BASE TURN TO LAND ABEAM RWY 16 IN THE GRASS ON THE EAST SIDE OF THE RUNWAY. ON FINAL HE SELECTED FULL FLAPS. THEN AS APPROACH LANDING, PULLED THE FUEL MIXTURE TO FULL LEAN, TURNED THE FUEL SELECTOR TO OFF, AND POPPED THE LATCH ON THE DOOR. FLEW THE AIRCRAFT JUST ABOVE THE GRASS UNTIL THE STALL WARNING HORN CAME ON THEN EASED IT DOWN WHILE ATTEMPTING TO KEEP THE LEFT WING FROM SETTLING. AT SOME POINT DURING THE LANDING HE REALIZED THE LEFT WING WAS NOT SETTLING AND THEREFORE THE GEAR MUST HAVE COME DOWN. ONE OF THE RESPONDERS STATED THE GEAR APPEARED TO EXTEND DURING LANDING JUST BEFORE THE LEFT WING SETTLED. ONCE STOPPED.

UPON INITIAL AIRCRAFT INSPECTION THE LEFT INNER GEAR DOOR IS COMPLETELY SHEERED OFF THE HINGE. THE ENTIRE ROW OF RIVETS IS COMPLETE SHEERED OFF. IT IS THIS GEAR DOOR THAT APPEARS TO HAVE JAMMED AGAINST THE LEFT MAIN GEAR PREVENTING IT FROM MOVING UNTIL THE BUMPINESS OF THE GRASS LANDING SEEMS TO HAVE BUMPED IT LOOSE JUST IN TIME.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
