## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

GLIDER PILOT^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ OF N974CQ ATTEMPTING A RETURN FOR LANDING TO METHOW STATE S52, COULD NOT MAKE IT ALL THE WAY BACK AND SELECTED A OPEN MEADOW10 MILES SHORT OF TARGET. LIFT GENERATED FROM MOUNTAINOUS TERRAIN AND VALLEY HE SELECTED TO TRAVERSE DID NOT GENERATE THE NEEDED LIFT AS ANTICIPATED BY VISUAL SIGNS. PIC DETERMINED SAFEST OPTION TO LAND OFF AIRPORT AND SETUP TO DESCEND INTO FIELD WITH FULL FLAPS AND SPOILERS AND FULL BRAKING ON GROUND BUT COULD NOT COME TO FULL STOP BEFORE END OF MEADOW WITH SERVAL TREES IN HIS PATH PIC ELECTED TO TAKE TREE ON RH WING SPINNING HIM AROUND AND STRIKING LH WING AND BREAKING OFF TAIL. PIC RECEIVED MINOR INJURIES AND REMAINED IN AIRCRAFT UNTIL EMS EXTRACTED HIM FOR NECK INJURY PRECAUTIONS..

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR21LA235](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR21LA235), Jun 20, 2021: HPH Glasflugel (N974CQ), Winthrop, WA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The glider’s encounter with atmospheric conditions where the lift was not sufficient to maintain flight.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
