## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON 21 JUNE, 2021, AT APPROXIMATELY 1306 HRS (MDT), N2087F, A 1976 CESSNA MODEL 182P SINGLE ENGINE AIRCRAFT, BEING OPERATED UNDER PART 91 OF THE FEDERAL AVIATION REGULATIONS, CRASHED APPROXIMATELY 3 MILES EAST OF WARREN, IDAHO, AFTER AN ABORTED LANDING ATTEMPT ON RUNWAY 12 OF WARREN USFS STRIP. THE ABORTED LANDING WAS WITNESSED BY AT LEAST ONE RESIDENT OF THE TOWN, WHICH IS ADJACENT TO THE USFS STRIP. THE WITNESS DESCRIBED THE AIRCRAFT AS "BARELY CLEARING THE TREES". THE 2 CERTIFICATED PRIVATE PILOTS, THE SOLE OCCUPANTS OF THE AIRCRAFT, WERE SERIOUSLY INJURED IN THE ACCIDENT AND POST-CRASH FIRE. THE AIRCRAFT WAS DESTROYED BY FIRE. THE US AIR FORCE RESCUE COORDINATION CENTER REPORTED AN ELT ACTIVATION AT THAT TIME AND LOCATION. APPROXIMATELY 1 HOUR LATER, RESIDENTS OF WARREN WERE ALERTED OF AN ELT ACTIVATION BY THE IDAHO COUNTY SHERIFF?S OFFICE. VOLUNTEER RESPONDERS FROM THE TOWN LOCATED THE TWO INJURED PILOTS NEAR SMITH'S KNOB. THE AIRCRAFT, AND SURROUNDING BRUSH, WAS STILL ON FIRE. THE TWO PILOTS WERE ABLE TO EGRESS THE BURNING AIRCRAFT AND EXTINGUISH THE FIRE ON EACH OTHER'S CLOTHING. RESPONDERS HELPED THE PILOTS WALK APPROXIMATELY 3/4 OF A MILE TO A POINT WHERE THEY COULD BE TRANSPORTED BY A MEDICAL EVACUATION HELICOPTER TO BOISE, IDAHO THEN TRANSFERRED TO A BURN CENTER IN UTAH. UPDATE 07/29/2021, TELEPHONE INTERVIEW WITH BOTH PILOTS, PIC ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ STATED NO MECHANICAL MALFUNCTIONS WITH AIRCRAFT AND AIRCRAFT COULD NOT OUTCLIMB RISING TERRAIN. PIC FURTHER STATED DENSITY ALTITUDE AND HIS IMPROPER DECISIONS AND LACK OF MOUNTAIN FLYING TRAINING/EXPERIENCE CAUSED ACCIDENT. IN A WRITTEN STATEMENT FROM THE ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^PASSENGER, THE AIRCRAFT IMPACTED A TREE ON GO-AROUND AFTER THE ABORTED LANDING ATTEMPT RESULTING IN SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE TO THE LEFT WING. THE PASSENGER STATED THE AIRCRAFT WAS STILL ABLE TO FLY BUT COULD NOT OUTCLIMB THE RISING TERRAIN.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR21LA237](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR21LA237), Jun 21, 2021: Cessna 182P (N2087F), Warren, ID, destroyed. Probable cause: The pilot's decision to continue the approach for landing with excess airspeed, which resulted in an aborted landing and subsequent collision with trees.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
