## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

IN LEVEL CRUISE AT 4500MSL WHILE LEANING MIXTURE THE ENGINE LOST ALL POWER AND WOULD NOT RESTART.

PIC MADE EMERGENCY LANDING IN CORNFIELD AND THE NOSE LANDING GEAR SHEARED OFF.

INITIAL CHECK OF FUEL TANKS DID NOT SHOW ANY FUEL IN RIGHT WING TANK AND MINIMAL FUEL IN LEFT WING TANK.

PIC STATED THAT HE WAS FLYING WITH THE FUEL SELECTOR ON THE RIGHT TANK. HE STATED THAT HE LOOKED INTO THE FUEL TANKS DURING PREFLIGHT AND SAW FUEL AND THE RIGHT FUEL QUANTITY GAUGE INDICATED 3/4 OF A TANK WHEN BATTERY POWER WAS APPLIED PRIOR TO THE FLIGHT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN21LA423](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN21LA423), Sep 16, 2021: Mooney M20J (N823SP), Howell, MI, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s inadequate preflight inspection of the airplane’s fuel quantity, which resulted in a total loss of engine power due to fuel starvation.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
