## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

AIRCRAFT WAS DESCENDING TO DESTINATION AIRPORT ALONG ROUTE OF FLIGHT IN VFR CONDITIONS WHEN PILOT NOTICED A DECELERATION OF THE AIRCRAFT AND HEARD SEVERAL LOUD POPS. PILOT ATTEMPTED TROUBLESHOOTING AND RESTART WITH NO SUCCESS. ELECTED TO DEPLOY AIRCRAFT PARACHUTE. UPON DESCENDING INTO TREE CANOPY THE TAIL BROKE OFF AND FLEW ABOUT 75 FEET FORWARD OF WHERE THE AIRCAFT SETTLED ON THE FOREST FLOOR.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR22LA019](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR22LA019), Oct 15, 2021: Lancair ES (N511ZZ), Fall Creek, OR, substantial damage. Probable cause: Total loss of engine power due to fatigue failure of the camshaft gear.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
