## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

DURING A SIMULATED INSTRUMENT FLIGHT TRAINING EXERCISE AND ENROUTE FROM DRIGGS IDAHO AIRPORT TO REXBURG IDAHO AIRPORT THE CERTIFIED FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR INSTRUCTED THE STUDENT PILOT TO DESCEND TO 6000 FEET MSL. THE INSTRUCTOR WAS NOT AWARE OF THE GROUND ELEVATION, AND BECAUSE OF THE NIGHT FLYING CONDITION COULD NOT SEE THE TERRAIN. THE AIRCRAFT IMPACTED THE GROUND AT APPROXIMATELY 6200 FEET MSL. THE DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT

WAS SUBSTANTIAL. THE PILOT AND STUDENT DID SUSTAIN MINOR INJURIES.

AIRCRAFT RECORDS WERE REVIEWED AND FOUND TO HAVE PROPER AIRCRAFT

CERTIFICATION AND CURRENT AIRCRAFT INSPECTION STATUS. PILOT RECORDS WERE

REVIEWED AND FOUND TO HAVE THE CORRECT CERTIFICATION AND QUALIFICATION

FOR THE FLIGHT.

CORRECTIVE ACTION INCLUDES RECOMMENDING A 44709 REEXAMINATION OF THE CERTIFIED FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR22LA030](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR22LA030), Oct 28, 2021: Piper PA-28-140 (N1671J), Newdale, ID, substantial damage. Probable cause: The flight instructor’s failure to monitor the flight to ensure terrain clearance during the dark night conditions.
