## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON 11/19/2021, THE STUDENT PILOT OPERATING N221HG DURING SOLO OPERATIONS HAD A LOSS OF CONTROL AFTER LIFTING THE AIRCRAFT OFF THE RAMP AREA. THE PILOT ATTEMPTED TO COUNTERACT THE TORQUE BY APPLYING PEDAL CONTROL. THE PILOT'S INPUT WAS EXCESSIVE AND REQUIRED OPPOSITE CONTROL, WHICH WAS ALSO EXCESSIVE. AT THIS POINT, THE PILOT ATTEMPTED TO CORRECT BY REDUCING THE COLLECTIVE, BUT THIS ACTION WAS NOT SUFFICIENT TO STOP THE OSCILLATIONS AND THE HELICOPTER BEGAN TO ROTATE OUT OF HIS CONTROL. THE HELICOPTER ROTATED AROUND 360 DEGREES, AND STRUCK THE TAIL ON THE RAMP BREAKING OFF THE TAIL ROTOR. THE HELICOPTER DROPPED BACK TO THE RAMP WITH ENOUGH FORCE TO BREAK THE SKIDS SUPPORT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN22LA041](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN22LA041), Nov 19, 2021: Robinson Helicopter R22 Beta (N221HG), Miamisburg, OH, substantial damage. Probable cause: The student pilot’s failure to maintain control of the helicopter during a low-altitude hover shortly after liftoff.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
