## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

INVESTIGATION: THE AIRMAN WAS CONDUCTING A PERSONAL FLIGHT SIGHTSEEING UP THE KNIK RIVER BASIN. IT WAS A CLEAR, COLD DAY. THE PILOT EXPERIENCED POWER LOSS AND APPLIED APPROPRIATE PROCEDURES FOR CARBURETOR ICING. THIS FAILED TO CORRECT THE POWER LOSS. THE PILOT CONDUCTED AN EMERGENCY LANDING AT A KNOWN STRIP. THE SURFACE WAS COVERED IN TWO FEET OF SNOW AND THE AIRCRAFT FLIPPED OVER ON IT'S BACK ON ROLLOUT.

WEATHER FORECASTS DIDN'T INDICATE ICING CONDITIONS. THE FLIGHT WAS LESS THAN 25 MILES FROM POINT OF DEPARTURE. NO DEFICIENCIES IN THE FAA NINE RESPONSIBILITIES.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ANC22LA008](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ANC22LA008), Nov 26, 2021: Piper PA-18 (N1380A), Palmer, AK, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s failure to effectively use carburetor heat in conditions conducive to the formation of carburetor ice, which resulted in a partial loss of engine power, off-airport landing, and nose over.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
