## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ACCIDENT INVOLVES AN ATTEMPTED HIGH-SPEED TAXI "SHAKE-DOWN" OF A NEWLY RESTORED ANTIQUE AIRCRAFT. THE PILOT'S INTENTION WAS TO ENTER A GRASS INFIELD AREA FOR A HIGH SPEED TAXI EASTBOUND ON THE GRASS, THEN COMPLETE A NORMAL TAXI ON THE PAVED TAXIWAY, AND DEPART RUNWAY 6. THERE WAS A LOSS OF CONTROL AND OVERTURNING OF THE AIRCRAFT WHEN IT BECAME AIRBORNE FOR A BRIEF MOMENT, THEN SETTLED ONTO THE GRASS AND TRANSITIONED TO A PAVED AREA ON THE AIRPORT'S EAST SIDE. WHILE THE PILOT REPORTED LOGGING CONSIDERABLE EXPERIENCE IN THE TYPE AIRCRAFT INVOLVED, HE WAS OPERATING THE PARTICULAR AIRCRAFT FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE COMPLETION OF ITS FULL RESTORATION DAYS AGO. THE AIRPLANE WAS EQUIPPED WITH A LIFT OPTIMIZED WING AND MECHANICAL BRAKES, TWO SYSTEMS THAT THE PILOT WAS UNACCUSTOMED TO THROUGHOUT HIS EXPERIENCE IN THE TYPE, AND HE STATED THAT HE CHOSE TO UTILIZE THE GRASS INFIELD FOR HIS HIGH-SPEED RUN BECAUSE HE BELIEVED THAT THAT SURFACE WOULD BE ?MORE FORGIVING? THAN THE ADJACENT RUNWAY. ONCE UP TO SPEED HOWEVER, THE PILOT STATED THAT THE ?LIFT WING? CAUSED THE AIRPLANE TO LEAVE THE GROUND WITHOUT EXPECTATION, AND RESULTED IN HIS APPLYING THE DISSIMILAR BRAKES IN THE GRASS AREA AS THE AIRCRAFT SETTLED AND TRANSITIONED FROM THE GRASS AREA TO THE PAVED AREA AHEAD. THE PILOT DESCRIBED THE BRAKES AS ?GRABBY? AND STATED THAT HE DISCOVERED THE AMOUNT OF BRAKE APPLICATION USED IN THE GRASS AREA WAS SUDDENLY EXCESSIVE ONCE THE AIRCRAFT?S WHEELS MET THE PAVED SURFACE AREA AHEAD. THE PILOT ALSO DESCRIBES UNFAVORABLE AND VARIABLE WINDS OPPOSITE THE NORMAL FLOW OF TRAFFIC AS CONTRIBUTING TO THE AIRPLANE?S OVERTURNING, ALONG WITH THE AFOREMENTIONED CAUSES.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR22LA051](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR22LA051), Nov 30, 2021: Travel Air 4-D (N476N), Riverside, CA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to abort a high-speed taxi in time before the airplane exited the end of the airstrip which resulted in the pilot’s over application of the brakes and subsequent nose over.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
