## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON 01/19/2022 N449JA, A PA-44, EXPERIENCED AN INCIDENT INVOLVING THE COLLAPSE OF THE NOSE WHEEL UPON LANDING. A FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR WAS CONDUCTING AIRWORK WITH A STUDENT PILOT IN A LOCAL FLIGHT FOR PART 141 FLIGHT TRAINING. THE PILOT REPORTED THAT THE LANDING GEAR DID NOT INDICATE UP AND LOCKED AFTER COMPLETING POWER OFF STALLS IN THE LAKE MATTHEWS PRACTICE AREA, BUT THAT THE LANDING GEAR CONSISTENTLY INDICATED DOWN AND LOCKED WHEN CYCLED TO THE DOWN POSITION. THE PILOT ELECTED TO RETURN TO CNO FOR LANDING, DURING WHICH HE REPORTS LOSING CONTROL ON LANDING ROLLOUT. THE AIRCRAFT DEPARTED THE LANDING SURFACE TO THE RIGHT WHEN STEERING INPUTS WERE INEFFECTIVE, STRUCK A RUNWAY SIGN, AND CAME TO REST WITH A COLLAPSED NOSE WHEEL MOUNT. BOTH PROPELLERS STRUCK THE GROUND AND BENT AS A RESULT, AND THE UNDERSIDE OF THE AIRCRAFT IN THE NOSE AREA WAS DAMAGED. THE FLIGHT SCHOOL PURSUED INSURANCE ADJUSTMENT BELIEVING REPAIR COULD BE MADE, HOWEVER THE AIRPLANE WAS DETERMINED TO BE A LOSS DUE TO COST OF REPAIR.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
